I used to have a roof-mounted rack, and put the bike up there while I drove my wife to work, and then took it off and rode to the other side of Hull for my own work. I can tell you, putting a bike up on a car roof and taking it off twice a day can get very boring.
I now have one of the towball types (Paddy Hopkirk, which shows how old it is) which clamps like scissors on the towball and folds flat when not needed. Very easy to use, bikes are at a convenient height, no extra wind resistance. Cheap to buy, and a lighting board is only £20 from Halfords, if you already have a towbar.
And yes, I did smack my wife's bike to a pulp when it was roof mounted and I wanted to get into a car park in a strange town and didn't see the barrier. Surprisingly easy to do when you are concentrating on other things. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
