CCI Legal chasing old debt. Are they genuine?

Options
Hello All, a newbie here needing some advice please;

I received a letter from CCI Legal Services LTD (credit license number in letter is 627305), chasing a student loan I took in Sweden about 15 years ago.

I have not heard from the student board in Sweden at any point and the "rules" of the loan was that I would start paying back once I had a job in Sweden.
Since I moved to the UK straight away after uni and have stayed here since, I never thought of it again and they never reminded me either.

Today I get a very basic letter from CCI saying they are appointed recovery agents, claiming the full amount by Tuesday and they give 4 different ways of paying. They are closed over the weekend.

Since it is weekend I can't call the Swedish Student aid board either.

Freaking out!

Any advise most appreciated.

they seem to be international debt collectors.

I would contact the Swedish Student aid board before responding to these idiots.

Their deadline is meaningless. you need to get to the bottom of whether you need to pay unless you return to Sweden.

It's all based on the terms of the loan, however I think it naive to believe that the debt evaporated simply because you boarded an aircraft to the UK. Morally, if they gave you the money, you are expected to pay it back!

You may want to check your credit files anyway as the damage may already be done.
  • Thanks, I appreciate the replies.

I get that morally I should be paying back, I simply did not earn enough for at least the 3 first years of living in the UK to hit the limit where I would be paying back and after that I never thought of it again and they never contacted me either.
I have no idea what the full terms of the loan was anymore or even if the amount CCI is asking for, was what I borrowed.

I think my credit is OK as I have a mortgage in the UK and also work in a place where they do credit checks? Or they would not have found that?

I will contact the student board ASAP on Monday to see if CCI is a bunch of thieving robdogs or the genuine article.

    Thanks again!

Keep an eye on your credit file. Unlikely they will report on a non UK debt but don't be surprised.

The fact that they have demanded payment "by Tuesday" makes me think that they are a bottom feeder and likely to bend the rules.

The Tuesday date is arbitrary and entirely designed to get you stressing. Don't let them win on that one.

Lastly from me, I would probably pen a letter over the weekend asking them for proof that they have the legal right to collect on this and the sum they are demanding is correct. (For that you will need some proof of assignment and a copy of the agreement from them I think).
  • Hey, did you get to the bottom with this? Did you find out if they can enforce it in uk?
