my daughter is getting married next month and still needs to sort out readings/poems for her wedding. She says 'everyone seems to have the same ones' and is looking for something a bit different but which is still a reading which grabs you and is easy to listen to even if its the first time you have heard it
All ideas gratefully received! She has to go and chat to the Registrar on Monday so needs to sort this out over the weekend
Many thanks!

"I believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another."
"It's easy to know what you're against, quite another to know what you're for."

OH's brother and now wife had 'The marriage of Psyche' by Kathleeen Raine which was absolutely lovely but we probably can't half inch. I can't remember their other reading and didn't keep the order of service but I think it was an extract from something called 'the imperfect marriage'.
I like the extract about marriage from Captain Correlli's Mandolin too0 -
We had this http://www.eclectic-unions.com/2011/01/reading-idea-a-lovely-love-story/ when my husband asked his friend to read it he thought we were joking to start with. He quickly decided he quite liked it and read it brilliantly for us.0

We're still deciding on ours! I know I'd like a sweet funny one and then something more serious, but am struggling to choose as I keep finding ones I like. These are the contenders:
A Lovely Love Story (the one Maysie linked to)
I Like You: http://www.itakeyou.co.uk/wedding-ideas/wedding-readings-poems/i-like-you.htm
Shakespeare's Sonnet 116: http://www.shakespeare-online.com/sonnets/116.html
A Birthday: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/174258
I also really like this extract from The Velveteen Rabbit: http://sarahritchieweddingreadings.blogspot.co.uk/2010/05/from-velveteen-rabbit.html"A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
I do like a lovely love story but that is also very common. I've heard it at quite a few different weddings.
We took some song lyrics and used them as our reading. The song then had personal meaning to us rather than just being a reading for a reading's sake!
You can see the song we choose here
I just rejigged it a little bit and took out the choruses so it didn't become too repetitive.
Perhaps ask your daughter if she has any songs that have particular meaning to her?0 -
we used an extract from 'now we are six' by A A Milne, all about soul mates so very appropriate!0

My favourite reading from a wedding that I haven't heard anywhere else http://www.ogdennash.org/poems/i_do_i_will_i_have.htm0

We had Ogden, too:

Also cad classic Corinthians and an extract from Stardust:
"Yvaine: You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn’t true. I know a lot about love. I’ve seen it; I’ve seen centuries and centuries of it. It’s the only thing that made watching your world bearable.
All the wars, pain, lies, and hate, made me want to turn away and never look down again. But to see the way that mankind loves! I mean you could search the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful.
So, yes I know that love is unconditional, but I also know it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable, and strangely easy to mistake for loathing. And, well, what I’m trying to say, Tristan, is.. I think I love you.
My heart it feels like my chest can barely contain it, like it doesn’t belong to me anymore; it belongs to you, and if you wanted it, I’d wish for nothing in exchange: no gifts, no goods, no demonstrations of devotion, nothing, but knowing you love me, too. Just your heart in exchange for mine."0 -
How about the lyrics from a song some can be relevant.Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.0
