Strange Job Interview

Options
May be I'm being a bit suspicious, you guys I'm sure can shed some light.

I've seen the same job advert for a career in marketing in the Bristol area for months, I'm getting a little desperate for a job so I applied and got an interview so I went along.

Although they have been advertising for months there were four other people there for an interview.

They told me the marketing company name was Mantra Marketing but another girl waiting for an interviews was told that the company is called Indigo Marketing (I over heard).

The interview was at their office on Baldwin Street, it was odd, the quite untrained girl asked me a few stupid questions and barely found out anything about me, she just chatted about her and her holiday instead.

Despite that I got invite back for a day long evulation session with them.

Called me paranoid but I'm thinking everyone gets an interview with this company and everyone gets put through to the second stage.

So what's the catch? What are they up to?
Anyone else had dealings with them?

It all seems almost like a scam... I can't help thinking that I'll go for the day and they'll try and sign me up to work for Klenezee or some kind of pyramid scheme... although I'm sure it's not that dodgy... is it?#

Mantra and Indigo have the same address. Probably owned by the same inidividuals. Indigo seems to be selling training in marketing - it's not mentioned with a cost - perhaps that comes at your second interview. One of the Mantra contact links opened an Outlook email on my computer and the recipient domain name isn't mantra but one of the other companies they mention (not Indigo).

I think you may be right about a pyramid-like scheme.

the trail for mantra seems to lead back to Cobra http://www.cobragroup.com/about.html
looks like they (and their Human comercials)are mainly involved in knocking on doors and flogging you an alternative power supply.
  • Stay away! Last time I interviewed for a job with "marketing" in the name, I found out that it was door to door sales. Someone my husband works with worked for this company for a day, she got chased away from someone's house with a bat! I understand the desperation to find a job, but avoid this one! I do believe the company I applied for was under the cobra group.
  • Thanks for your help guys, I will not be going back on Wednesday.
Although now I'm actually intrugied to go back to find out what it is all about but it's a waste of petrol, parking and my time.

I went through their "recruitment" process and you're right it is door to door sales. depending on the area/office/etc they can seel anything from phones to utilities to getting donations for charities.

How do they pay? Comission only?

Have you tried the agencies in Bristol? Kelly's in the centre are pretty good if you're looking for officey type work....

I got scammed on a job in town once, tried to get me to phone people to flog kitchens...never went back (and they never phoned to ask where I was either..caring employer I don't think!)

Oh, there's plenty to apply for really in my area.
I don't really think much of agencies, none of them in my experience have ever been any good.
  • from some lateral-thinking googling i find that
http://www.emporio-marketing.com/index.html has virtually the same wording, mission statement etc as Mantra, and they are in the same building in Bristol

i am-or perhaps "was" due to drive a long way to Bristol for an interview with Mantra tomorrow, i may now dump that idea, thanks to this site! and thanks to Doug for the warning

    Doug,

Theres a good agency on Gloucester road, near the arches, a few doors up from the Prince of Wales Pub. An independant

Go in and have a chat with them about what your looking for. If they can't help you, they (read I lol) will tell you.

We're not all bad you know
