Unable to pay default due to closed account

Hi there, first time poster.
I have been trying to search the internet for this question, but have had no luck.
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place.
Here goes, I have a default of £532 with lloyds bank. I have numerous times tried to pay the amount off. They kept saying my address is wrong when making a payment over the phone. I have been living here for 15 years so that's a load of rubbish. I was then told I had to make the payment online which failed. It said incorrect account details. So I phone up lloyds another time and was told I am unable to pay due to account being closed. The default is from 09 and is obviously affecting my credit rating. What do I do about this default as it is their fault it has not been paid. I am trying to get my credit score up and this is not helping when I can't satisfy this only default on my credit report. I am going to put a notice on my report but is there anything I can do to fight the reason of it not being paid and clear this mess up?
Thank j :-)

The debt may well have been either passed to a debt collector for collection or even sold to a debt collector.
You could call up their collections department and ask them to confirm if they still own the debt and how you should pay and if not which debt collector do you need to contact.
Or if that isn't getting you very far then you may need to write to and ask them to confirm how/who you should pay.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
You should realise that phoning has been a waste of time. Write to them. There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0

Write to them, tell them you want to pay. Ask who owns the debt and who you should pay if not them.:beer:0

I would also tell them that as it is their fault that you cannot pay the debt and have it marked as satisfied, then you will be taking the matter to the FOS if they do not allow you to do so or tell how to get it done if not via them.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Are you trying to pay with a Nationwide card over the phone?
Mine never works if they put Cheshire in the address as Cheshire doesnt appear on my Nationwide account.
Annoying glitch with Nationwide.0
