    Main points are;
    1. Better processor AMD Semperon vs Via (never heard good things about the via, people slate the AMD as well but its better than the via )
    2. 1GB RAM vs 256MB
    3. 120GB HDD vs 40GB
    4. 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display vs 14.1" 1024 x 768
    5. DVD RW vs DVD ROM \ CD RW

I'm not slating this deal and if you only have £200 to spend then go for it. But £92 more will give you a much better machine that will have a longer life. The difference gets less if you start buying RAM upgrades and external drives as well.

This assumes the Dell is still available.

Your right rob, where do you stop!, why not pay another couple of grand and buy the lexus instead of that mondeo?
I presume these are new (hope so, just reserved one for me nipper), good price for her to tip her drinks and nail varnish in!
And as for VIA, well they must have a chipset in at least half the worlds PC's... they were early runners in the processor game but fizzled out, now (i think) they just make chipsets for motherboards and other peripherals, would emagine they are still a massive concern.

Absolutely, I think PCW are selling it to get people in to spend more! Nearly worked with us. We just wanted to buy a fresh-install of Windows. Then realised this laptop would do the trick. Then saw an Intel machine with bigger drive/more RAM. Then saw a Pentium. Then a Dual Core. Then a trick shiny silver pretty one for £529. Then the shock kicked in and we bought the £199 quickly, before the purchase of Vista became a trick laptop for £529!!!

I'm proud of my restraint :p Doesn't happen that often :rotfl:

Well done... they even try and shove a copy of norton on you at web checkout for 29.99 ;)

all I was looking to do was buy Vista on my spare surfing/email machine (as original Windows on old PC had gone pop) but Vista alone was best part of £200!!!!!
Go to https://www.ubuntu.com, download the live CD, and try it. It won't touch your hard drive, so won't do any more damage, unless you press the install button. It will probably work very well if you have 256MB of RAM. If you don't, you can get a low memory version.
light user looking for first laptop/PC for just surfing/email/light number & word crunching - ideal for your kids/parents
The nice thing about Linux for this is that it is more or less immune from all the nasty spyware, viruses, trojans, keystroke loggers etc out there, which the non-technical are more likely to fall victim to.

but the main reason vista use's more resource's is all the over the top security.
Some of the reason - don't forget also all the excess code it contains constantly monitoring your PC in case you are trying to use it to copy films that you are watching. Woe betide you if it decides that you're being naughty if you aren't!

Your right rob, where do you stop!

You stop where it feels right for you, if you only have £200 then this is the laptop for you. If you have £92 more then the Dell is expontentially better value for money and if I was buying a laptop then that where I would stop (although the screen res on the dell is still quite low).
why not pay another couple of grand and buy the lexus instead of that mondeo?

How do you know I have a mondeo are you stalking me :D ? I took advantage of the massive depreciation that mondeos suffer from though before buying it!

Agreed Via make chipsets which i have used in many PC's but as I said I have never heard anything good about their processors. I think they equate to either a 733Mhz or 1GHz Pentium 3 in performance terms. And although I have given my brother and parents machines with 1GHz P3 processors in them I'm not sure I'd spend £200 on one especially when a much better spec dell was available for not that much more money.

I'm not getting at anyone here and as I said if you only have £200 to spend and need a laptop then buy this. But you will get exponentially better value for money with the Dell.

    Cheers
    Rob
  • win xp running on 256mb of ram is a painful eXPerience. It will need to be upgraded to 512mb minimum (which will probably be fine for light inet usage), 1gb would be better if you plan to have a few progs open at once.
