can someone help with this problem?
I am thinking about maybe going to IOW.
Going 27 Aug returning 30 Aug
Going from wallington (surrey) to lake
1 adult 1 child one F & F railcard.
On national rail journey planner, It comes up as 2 singles £44.40 or a return £56.40
At the bottom it says purchase tickets through Southwest trains.
So went on to Southwest trains and the two singles are simply not showing, it just shows the return fare.
I also checked trainline and redspotted they had the same result as Southwest trains.
I obviously want to pay the lower fare, but cant seem to find it anywhere except on the National rail site whereb you cant buy tickets.
And is £44.40 the best deal?
Any thoughts?

When did you find those £44.40 tickets?
I cannot find anything better that the £56.40 Off Peak Return.
Is it possible that the £44.40 was for Advance Singles, and since you searched those tickets have sold out?0 -
Found it on the national rail journey planner.
And I've just found out they are advance singles. I can get £22.20 for the return leg, but as they want to charge me £38 for the outward one, the return at £56 is still my best option.0 -
[STRIKE]Not sure if this is too late, but you should be able to do this, prices for 1 adult + 1 child with the railcard except for the promotional fare (see website):
Wallington to Epsom £3.65
Epsom to Portsmouth Harbour £22
See: http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/summer.aspx
Portsmouth Harbour to Lake £20.55
Total £46.20[/STRIKE]
Edit: Does not apply as it's not a day trip and it's outside of the promotional period0 -

Trying Wallington to Portsmouth Harbour via Dorking on the above I can find Advances from £4.30
Out on the 0940 on 27/8 returning from Portsmouth Harbour on the 1529 on 30/8. Thats for 1 adult and 1 child with F&F railcard. This takes advantage of the Southern "Kid's for £2" promotion correctly (there was some disclaimer on their website saying it might not work).
So that's £8.60 to get to/from Portsmouth Harbour.
Portsmouth Harbour to Lake should be £28.25. The rail part of that is £4.60 and the ferry is the rest, so you may be able to approach Wightlink/Hovertravel directly and get a cheaper price (you cannot use the railcard though without an element of rail travel).0 -
That should read the rail part is effectively £6.90 as you'll need to buy singles if splitting it out from the ferry fare. So if you can get an adult and child ferry for less than £21.35 it will be worth it. The choices being Wightlink or Hovertravel.
If going for Hovertravel I am not sure they include the price of the bus from Portsmouth & Southsea to Southsea hoverport and be sure to change the destination on the advances if choosing this option (the reservation will specify the actual Portsmouth station IIRC).
I've probably made that all sound more complicated than it is!
Edit: Wightlink wanted £35.40 and Hovertravel wanted £39.00 so the £28.25 Anytime Return Portsmouth Harbour->Lake is currently looking better.
Edit2: The bus to the hoverport charges £1.60 Adult/£1.40 Child single on top too.0 -
There are also fares listed routed "AP SN & ISLAND L" but I could not get the Southern journey planner to show them. Maybe one of the other experts on here would have more luck.0

Had another look, the £8.60 fare will work to Portsmouth & Southsea as well from Wallington.
Then you can buy a through fare from Portsmouth & Southsea to Lake (under "show slower routes" select ANY PERM+HOVRTVL) via the Bus/Hovercraft. With the F&F railcard the cheapest option is 2 Anytime singles coming to £21.40.
So the whole lot can be done (currently as the AP fares to Portsmouth may increase) for a round £30.
I remember going on the Hovercraft as a kid and it was good fun.0
