melbury go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Systen Restore.
You will see a calender with various restore dates highlighted. Choose one before you did the updates.
    Hope you understand

I didn't do the updates, they are downloaded automatically. It looks like they have downloaded but not installed, so if I take it back to the day before they came in, will they disappear? Do I lose anything by doing this, such as emails etc?

Thanks so much for your help.

You won't loose anything and you also have the option to un-do the last restore if need be..

I tried the system restore thing, but it wouldn't work due to the fact that the computer needs to restart itself and because the updates are sitting there waiting to be installed, it won't actually shut down on its own. I have to hold my finger on the button for a few seconds to get it to shut down. When I started it again it said that it couldn't do the system restore because computer was incorrectly shut down!!!

Please, anybody, is there anything else I can do because I don't want to ruin my computer by shutting it down manually every day, which I am sure is not doing it any good.

    Many thanks.

In desperation I have sent an email via the Microsoft website asking for help!

I have now discovered that the problem update is a security update SP1, which I can't understand because I thought I had SP2. What is the difference?

Yes I thought about that, but won't the one that is downloaded still be there trying to install?

Not sure about that one but wouldnt cause any bother if you try it, if you want to update just do it manually through windows update.

Have spent hours today on the Microsoft site and have now discovered that this installation problem with KB928366 which is called Security Update Microsoft.NET Framework version 1.1 Service Pack 1, is a worldwide problem. I found lots of posts and some very complicated ways that people have got around this, but I just don't feel confident enough to try - I am not very technical when it comes to computers. You can't install it direct from the Microsoft site because the one that has already downloaded but won't install is stuck there in the way and won't go!

Really don't know what to do now, some people are saying it is a ploy by Microsoft to get people off XP and onto Vista!
