in Cutting tax
Hi,
I just moved in and received my first council tax letter. I am a full-time student holding a scholarship, so I have been told I can apply for a council tax exception. However, I live with my girlfriend (currently unemployed), so here comes my confusion. According to some sources if she depends on me (unemployed) we could get the exception so we would have to pay nothing, but according to other sources we will have to pay 75% of the tax (90 pounds). Is there any way we can reduce further this 75%?
Thanks

A single person can apply for a deduction in the amount of 25% as part of Single Persons Discount.
I don't know what deductions unemployed get.

Do you mean that 25% discount is the max discount we can probably get? We are currently engaged, will the situation change in term of the discount change after we get married as long as I continue with my studies?0

Have you gone to that website, typed in the postcode and had a look yourself?0

Full time students are disregarded for council tax purposes (hence why she would be eligible for the single person discount of 25%) as I am assuming it is only you and her living at the property.
What you would also need to do is contact your council to make an application for council tax support. For this though they would need details of income of all members of the household.
Suggest you speak to them as soon as you can so that they can advise you on what to do.Spelling courtesy of the whims of auto correct...

Your girlfriend needs to apply for council tax support. She will be assessed according to your joint income.0

Your GF will be liable for the council tax charge with a 25% discount due to you being a student - she will then need to claim for council tax support against the remaining 75% charge.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
