Church Wedding - URGENT

Good Afternoon lovely people!

I am due to get married in a Church in 12 days time and my friends daughter is due to get married in 19 days in a Chapel.

I have just been told by my friend that I need to go to the Registry office to pay the £35 each and have a meeting.. The Reverend has never mentioned this to me and I can't recall anybody I know having got married in a Church so I am appealing for urgent help and advice!!!

I don't want this to be the thing that stops my wedding but my understanding was that this fee was only applicable if you were having a Registrar marry you (whether at the Registry Office or at a Hotel/ other venue) and that these fees were all built into the substantial amount of money we paid to the Church (which did include a subheading of fees with an amount)..

HELP!!

We got married in a church and still had to have sign forms for the council and have ID to collect our wedding Schedule.

if it's a CofE wedding and you have had Banns called, I'm pretty sure that you don't need to give notice at the registry office.
If it's another church and the "Reverend" is also a registrar, then this should all be taken care of in the fees you are paying - however some church ministers/pastors/Reverends etc are NOT registrars and you DO have to give notice AND also have a registrar present at the ceremony

The only way to be sure is to contact the church where you are getting married & ask!

I have sent an email to the Reverend just to be sure but called the local Registry Office who have confirmed what you said LE3 - a CofE Church deal with Banns themselves and therefore I do not need to pay any fees to them however, my friends daughter who is getting married in a Methodist Chapel does.

Thank you for all who have helped I think I popped out a few kittens then!!

    Is it Church of England?

I'm getting married this Saturday in a CofE church and have not given notice at the registry office. Have you had your Banns read? This is the equivalent of notice. If the church is CofE then your Rev'd should be working in the role of registrar.

MissTeach it is CofE and our Banns have been read by the Rev'd.

Thank you for your help everyone - panic averted!

Your friend marrying in the Methodist chapel will definitively need to give Notice of Marriage to their local Registrar, regardless of whether the chapel has it's own Registers for the ceremony.

The Church of England/Wales is the only religious denomination excluded from civil preliminaries.

There is still time, the notice period is 15 clear days, you can marry on the 16th day. She must ring for an appointment.
  • What everyone else has said - if it's a CofE church then you don't need to give notice, but all other religious denominations had to. My sister got married in a Catholic church and she had to give notice.
