Need 40A bra

I am having great difficulty finding a comfortable bra. I inherited a wide upper back from my mother, enhanced by muscles built over many years weight training.

As I have got older I have put on a bit of weight and now find that I need a bra with a larger band size but it is very hard to find one. I find that a 38c cup fits but the band is too narrow. It seems like I need a 40A. M & S don't seem to cater for this. Does anyone know someone who does?

If a c cup fits, then it is more likely you need a 40b rather than a. Try figleaves.

There's some difference between a 38c and a 40a. Get measured properly would be an idea worth considering. M&S do it.
Uncomfortable enough pieces of attire without wearing one the wrong size.

M&S have a lot of 40 back bras on their website - if they don't have them in store you can order them online and return ones you don't like - or order for delivery to the store, use their changing rooms and return them there and then.

The method she describes for measuring is awful! Far better to get a proper fitting at John Lewis or the like - in fact anywhere but M&S, who are renowned for giving poor fitting advice.

I agree; I was "fitted" in M&S and told I was a 38C, in fact I'm a 32F! I'm just glad I knew better, as a 38 band wouldn't have given me ANY support and all the weight would have been dragging on my shoulder straps.

Once you have a bra which fits well, it really is a revelation; if you can "feel" it then it's probably not the right size.

I tried getting measured in my local M and S. A bored looking girl in an empty fitting area said they needed two days notice as they were "fully booked." I bought two or three bras in different sizes and the 38c fitted on the cups but was a bit tight so I bought another one in same size and style as it was the best fit I could get. That was a good 1inch + smaller at the back than the first one and did not fit at all. I asked about 40as and they said they hardly ever stocked them. (And it is a large branch.) They did not offer to order any for me.

I went into Debenhams and asked for a fitting and was sold a 36c which turned out to be so tight I could not wear it. Fig leaves have a very limited range in 40a mostly for masectomies or sports bras. I should like something lacy.

If the cups fit but the back is tight you could get a bra extender to get more comfortable wear out of the bras you have.
