Hi, thanks everyone for your replies and advice.

I was thinking to ask them to cancel it because no taxes are owed and I am not receiving any taxable income.

I guess I better try to carry on ploughing through this form.

    My second question is:

    • Since my accounts are up to 16/7/13 and not 5/04/14, can I use the short form or do I need to use the long one?
    • If I do it online, will I be directed towards the short form or long one by the Inland Revenue system?

    Thanks again, Laura
  • You *can* ask HMRC to withdraw a notice to a file a tax return but they are unlikely to in most cases. There's no harm in asking though.

It does not work like that. Short does not refer to the length of time trading - more to the turnover level and complexities. Answer the questions - it will be short completion.
There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who do not.

    Hi everyone,

Ok, so my accounting period ends on 16/07/13. What about the fact that the cheque for £60.00 that I received is dated 24/07/13? Does this affect anything regarding dates my books / accounts are made up to?

    Thanks, Laura

Not for tax purposes, the defining date is the date of your invoice or the date the work was done or service supplied.
The only thing that is constant is change.

    Hi zygurat789,

Thank you for still helping me to complete this form.

Can I then say that I used the cash basis system to calculate my income? There were no expenses.

It's not that I am extremely stupid for having started a business, it's just that a company I had worked for before I developed a disability promised me commissions on an ongoing basis. I thought I would ask an accountant to do the tax return for me.

    Thank you, Laura

Tax is done on a yearly basis. It doesn't matter if you have used the cash or accruals basis your accounting period is so short.
You are worrying over things which are totally minor, stop stressing, just put the figures in.
The only thing that is constant is change.

Yes, I know, but they threatened you with so many penalties for getting something wrong. Thanks anyway, I'll carry on.
