Solar Panel quote - Thoughts?

Hi all

First post on MSE as we're looking at getting solar PV panels and only had one quote so far which would appreciate comments about. We live in Scotland with S/W facing roof and no shading.

Total cost £8026

4 k/w 16 SolarWorld Premium Black panels
Inverter (don't know make yet)
Mounting Kit
Geo hand held monitor.

Chap suggested inverter fitted in loft and wired to the CU & all equipment with 10 yr warranty. The info on the FIT etc that he provided is:-

FIT - 527
Export - 87
Energy used - 280
TOTAL - 894
Payback period about 7 years

We will look to get a couple of other quotes, but the chap's main selling feature was the quality of the German panels etc etc.

Having had a look at similar threads on here, think this quote is perhaps bit expensive, but what other thoughts do you guys have???

Have a nice day, I'm away to watch a little bit of the golf at the Open !!!!

First of all welcome to the forum

As for your quote, far too much. I'd suggest its probably £2k or more too expensive irrespective of the kit they're suggesting.

Just for a change an installer has suggested that your usage would be deemed at 50% of your generation, again without the addition of devices like iboost, immersun etc etc its not going to happen unless your in the house all day. Take the energy used with a pinch of salt, it should be closer to £100-£150. Do you have an immersion heater? If so then maybe look at an iboost, immersun or similar, one of these would certainly improve your in house usage.

Last of all...do your homework, as you've stated, there's plenty of reading on the forums to help you, maybe even post your rough location so other members may recommend their installers, can't hurt to try. Keep posting and the members on here will do all they can to help you achieve your thrift installation.

Seems very expensive to me. We were quoted 5800 and that included an iboost on top of all the stuff you mention here. I would shop around.

8 Grand seems a bargain to me - but I'm basing that on 2011 prices; from what I read here, 5 grand would be something to aim for these days.

BTW giving location as 'Scotland' may not be all that helpful. From the Scottish border near Berwick on Tweed, it's actually further to John O'Groats than it would be to the M25 ! To use the PVGIS prediction pages you really need to be a lot more accurate than that.
