"poor food for poor people" ???

    Definitely not . . .

or poor people seen to have some very nice convertible sports cars and top spec 4x4s etc, if my (very clean, very bright, with friendly staff ) local Lidl is anything to go by . . .

Aldi is my second choice . . and Sainburys are bringing Netto back, yeah:)

Branding is for horses, and if you avoid buying processed food (why pay labour costs) and recognise the protein cost per 100g then it is a no brainer.
    Every Lidl helps.
  • When Lidl opened a store not too far away, I went in and bought some items. Quality was awful. I particularly remember the tinned peaches: half of them were green and hard, they were all tasteless.

    I never went back.

I shop carefully at Sainsburys. I use nearby Chinese, Korean and Indian shops for rice, fruit & veg. I hardly ever buy pizza or ready meals, almost always cook from scratch.

So I still won't be going back :D.
  • I used to shop predominantly at M&S and Sainsburys, however I always thoroughly enjoyed food that my European (German, Spanish, French and Italian) friends made for me. My friends would complain about the quality of the ingredients in our supermarkets and they took me shopping in Lidl and introduced me to specific foods that they enjoy from their own country (the exact same food costs a fortune in the local deli!). This converted me, and I now do my weekly shops in Lidl and Aldi. The fruit and veg in both is of an amazing quality, and I can buy so much of it for cheap - my family have an extremely healthy diet. Both Lidl and Aldi I believe are German companies - and the Germans will not tolerate bad quality!
Life is for living, and in addition to a fantastically healthy diet my family now has more money to spend on holidays and outings together :). I find both Aldi and Lidl great for clothing and equipment for our outdoor adventures (this summer I have purchased my daughter a 3mm wetsuit - thicker than the ones in the watersport stores, a proper life jacket and body board, for under £20).

We now shop at Lidl regularly for the basics and some fruit and veg. We cook from scratch so staples are tins of tomatoes, jars of sun-dried tomatoes (at 89p this week when everywhere else is over £1.50 - no brainer!), beer (Hobgoblin at £1.25 instead of £1.69 or more) and so on.
We've had quite a few good items from their weekly offers - the latest is (believe it or not) a kilt which my Scottish OH found in the Falkirk branch recently! He's hankered after one for ages for Burns night but they cost at least £100 elsewhere - he told me this was under £30 :j

    Crap.

What really, REALLY annoys me is that their beer range is awful.

They are German companies - German beer is the best in the world - IMPORT some, instead of selling the same old hackneyed crap that you find everywhere else.

    Gaah.

I can import 18 bottles of good stuff for ~ €48. Lidl/Aldi could do this, charge less, and still make one hell of a profit from people like me. They don't. Gap in the market, guys.

Oddly enough I still get loo roll at Sainsbury's, the 18 roll pack lasts us a month.

HA HA HA Sainsburgy's only good for loo roll!
That's splitting my sides and made by day.

Don't jump on me Sainbury's patrons, I just find that so funny.

I do shop at Sainbury's very occasionally, and not only for loo rolls.
  • I don’t see the problem of shopping at lidl. This depends on what the person wants and needs. Everyone has their choice of taste and need. If you look at the other supermarkets we do get our money stolen with all these up cost and trying to make it look like there are so many discounts going on

I've been using lidl and aldi on and off for a decade.

They're reasonable value, with limited range and topping off with a visit to the majors is generally required, but they are cheap.

If you don't like the quality, take it back! They do listen to customers, unlike others who send a "we're sorry" message and carry on regardless.

My only complaint is that I work late and the hours aren't convenient for me, but that's a minor issue.
