Dawes Galaxy - selling advice

My wife and I bought 'matching' bikes back in 1993 or thereabouts. I bought a Dawes Galaxy from a Dawes dealership, and we wanted a Lady Galaxy to go with it. This was unavailable (can't remember why) but the dealer had a Lady Galaxy frame in stock and made up a bike with identical components to my gents bike.

We haven't used them for years, although they have been dry stored, and it's time to move them on. Obviously they are not rare in any way, but they are classic tourers in good order with a lot of life left in them, and I would have thought they would have some value. Ebay is the obvious way, but I wondered if anyone on this forum could suggest a better way of selling them - cycling groups, forums etc? I've been out of the push-bike world for a long time now, and have lost touch. Any help or recommendations welcome.

I would google around your local area for cycling forums.
Either get a buyer or advice on local selling. You have Gumtree too which can generate good view numbers

Wihout a doubt, the obvious place is the CTC forum. You don't have to join the CTC, and if you do a search on it, I'd be surprised if you don't get a very good idea of what they're actually worth.

I've sold Brooks saddles on there before now and got the same or better prices than Ebay without having to pay Ebay a cut.
    We're all doomed
  • Like the above person said CTC or I'd try Gumtree and bike selling groups on Facebook.
I would try all avenues before resorting to Ebay. Also be prepared for idiots/timewasters/bad hagglers etc.
I'd have a price in mind and stick to it because people will make silly offers especially on Gumtree.

Thanks for the replies. I have checked the 'sold' prices on eBay and they seem to go for between £50 and £300 and up. Looks like it is a matter of finding the right buyer at the right time. Will check locally and see if there is anything on Facebook. I hadn't thought of CTC or Gumtree, so thanks for those suggestions.

Will let you know how I get on.

Just a quick update. I put the bike on eBay in the end, and it went for £250 or so, which I was happy with. I arranged to meet the seller at a railway station about half-way between us (100 miles each, but he paid for my fuel). I had been waiting half an hour when a car full of youngsters turned up. One was buying the bike for one of the others (who presumably had no money). They were all Oxford postgrads who were planning a cycle tour to Geneva, where they planned to visit CERN, starting the following day. They were mathematicians, but had friends in the physics world and were hoping for a guided tour of the Large Hadron Collider.

I couldn't be more pleased. A random meeting with some interesting people, the bike off to a good home, and getting some proper touring mileage that I hadn't been providing. And they paid cash, which was nice.

Four of them in a rented Clio and no bike rack. I left as they were taking the wheels off ... not my problem :)
