My son's girlfriends council tax final

Hi all, my son's girlfriend has moved into our house with him, which we are buying. A little stressfull but we get on ok. Last weekend they went to a concert for the weekend so we decided to clean their room for them and came across a letter addressed to her sent to our address, the letter was a final final reminder from an enforcement agency for £400, my question is can we get dragged into this if bailiffs do call round with regards to the repossession of goods

They cannot touch any goods that aren't hers but that doesn't stop them turning up at the door looking for her.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

They can only take her own goods, but I would curb on opening mail that is clearly not addressed to yourself.

I'm sorry, but why did you think it ok to read an open letter not addressed to you? they maybe in your house and you thought you were giving a treat to clean their room, but you had no right in reading her letter, I would keep it to yourself not mention any of this to your son or his GF, it will open a can of worms not just for you but your sons relationship.

Who said i opened the letter, it was as most things in their room are chucked open on the floor face up, and excuse me but if its addressed to this house and has enforcement agency and bailiffs all over it, then it is relevent. And anyway the reason i am here is because i dont want to raise the issue but want to make sure we arn't in any way liable for this either now or in the future

Would it be ok for his GF to read any letter that you have laying about, just because its open and on the floor, doesn't mean anyone can read it. it may have you're address but your not named on it. I would be really annoyed with my parents if they walked into my room and read my girlfriends letter, albeit you had good intentions of cleaning up, I would have lost all faith that my private stuff and room isn't safe whilst I'm out from prying eyes, and no doubt if my girlfriend found out, she would feel embarrassed, violated and cause distress and strain to the relationship.

I don't read open letters of other peoples, if I need to move them like my mothers ill just fold and move it. no need to read non my business what it contains.

Of course you read the letter.....

Stop cleaning their room, it is their private area.,

Forget you ever saw it. The contents have absolutely nothing to do with you.....
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

If you are letting your son and his girlfriend live in your house like adults, then personally I don't think you should even have been entering their room, let alone reading what you were cleaning up.

But that's JMO. To answer your question, if it is a CT debt then you probably will have court bailiffs arrive. You will need to demonstrate that the house and property in it belongs to you and not to her (e.g. rental agreement).

They would all be happy when the bailiffs turn up then. Not. So watching the bailiffs take the high horse from under them would be funny, but wouldn't really help you much.
End of the day, it's the house you live in the bailiffs will be coming to.
Get the rules clear, and address the problem with them both, If you offend them, they can always leave.

Biscuit, the respondents replying to your post are all complete strangers (myself included) who have no knowledge of the complexities of your situation. You are clearly unhappy with things generally, not just the outstanding debt that you have discovered, and it's down to you how you manage this going forward. For my own twopence worth I'd say it's your house so you set the rules. I'd be expecting them to fully pay their way with regard to household bills and would keep my purse in a safe place - there may well be other pressing debts of which you have no knowledge.

No safestored generally things are ok we only tidied the room up as it is generally a bit of !!!!-tip but we do it occasionally as a motivator in so much as they get to feel what a clean room feels like and they are starting to look after it, we deliberatley leave our purse lying around and have never been let down, they do have a high horse attitude to some things which they need to find out about themselves, my original post was not a rant only a need to clarify OUR postion legally.
