It's important that the OP understands how to end the tenancy and that the LL is under no legal obligation to let them end the tenancy early and pay rent pro-rata.

It only went off tangent because you don't understand how to end a tenancy.

Ok I officially give up, it seemed pretty straightforward to me that in the position the OP asked about of wanting to end the tenancy, good advice/a good plan of action would be

    1-Go read their tenancy agreement
2-See what the tenancy agreement says it permits as far as the OP giving notice and ending the tenancy
3-look to comply with that if it allows what the OP was after. Also in any case that the LL might well be likely to allow them to end the tenancy under whatever terms the LL originally stipulated to the OP (and the OP would seek confirmation of this in writing)

Apparently this is terrible advice according to posters claiming better experience on grounds OP 'may' have a illegal tenancy and all the rights the LL stated they were granting to the OP might well be invalid. ...and I'm having my head bitten off on the back of suggesting the above

*shrug* I guess you lot know best :(

Illegal tenancy? What are you on about.

The link in post 15 tells the OP all they need to know about ending a tenancy correctly and I'm certain it will match up with what is in their tenancy agreement.
