I think Dave is trying to make the party a bit more cuddly and lovable in the run up to the election.

Having Gove pick fights with Teachers for the next 12 months wouldn't be ideal preparation for the General Election.

If the Tories win next year expect Gove to be in line for one of the very top jobs.

    That's a big if I think.

Gove has his education strategy in place, and this new job for him will play to his assets.

Every commentator that I've heard in the political shows that I watch say that the women are talented. There are about 10 months till the next election, which will give the new people (it's not just women who have been promoted) a bit of experience in high-ish office.

IF the Tories get in again (which I rather doubt), then Cameron has the people in place to get on with the job, or they will have proved themselves to be just as incompetent as many men without doing too much damage.

Tactically, I think it's an excellent move.

(I agree that Gove is being used tactically to get him out of the teachers' eyelines, but also this move enables him to make the Tories more visible. Labour are very, very good at shouting over people and making their points, the Tories seem less so. Gove can run rings round Rachel Reeves and her self-righteous ilk).

The reshuffle is quite cynical. Having surrounded himself with posh public school boys for 4 years, not only has he promoted women he has promoted some who can at least claim working class roots.

Crabb, Truss, Clark all have fairly ordinary backgrounds. I see Truss' Dad refused to campaign for her according to Wikipedia!

I'm not so sure. Betfair has no majority as favourite with Lab and Cons roughly neck-and-neck.

The Tories have already shown that they can build and run a coalition.

so you really have a choice of just two people for any position. And that's before you even get to considering actual aptitude and qualification for the role.

So if from a very small pool you are trying to find some women to demonstrate your committment to equality, the number of really top quality women available will be even lower?
So the chances that any you do find will be either token, or set up to fail, or both, will be quite high?
