Tried applying for load, turned down

I tried applying online for a small loan of £2000, it said tuned down because of credit reference agencies.

I only have one default from years ago and it was closed.

If I try a smaller amount would that get accepted, or would it make my credit score lower?

    Your credit score is meaningless.

You haven't really given much information to go on. What is your income and employment status? Any existing credit commitments? When you say "years ago", how long? When you say "closed", do you mean it was satisfied? Partially satisfied? Run out after 6 years?

The default will stay on your file for 6 years from the date it was put on whether it was paid off or not. What does 'closed' mean? Did you repay it or not?

Speak to your own bank or save up what you need.

It was really annoying. It was one of those Lowell fraud cases.

Lowell seem to have bought lots of fraudulent debt obligations and put defaults on peoples files. They originated in Nigeria someone bought some stolen identity or some information, next thing a default shows up on someones credit file.

Any way Lowell said they would mark it as closed, but it still shows on my credit file. I wrote a note that Lowell admitted it was nothing to do with me.

I think there's a huge chunk of your story missing here.

If a debt isn't yours it should't appear on your credit report.

If Lowell agree it was nothing to do with you, why haven't they removed it from your file? They are the only ones who can do so.
  • You are falling into the trap of believing that a loan of £2k is a small loan. When you haven't got £2k, then that sum is a very large amount.

When you haven't got £100, even that amount is a large sum.

The refusal to give you a loan is almost certainly down to your default from four years ago. It will be another two years before it drops off your file.

As others have said, there is no such thing as a credit score. Every lender has their own rules.
