Can debt collecting companies add to your credit report?

Hi id like a little advice please if you default on a lender i understand they put a mark on your credit report, however if they then sell this debt to a debt collection company have they the right to add a mark on your credit file, i understand they brought the debt but ive not signed anything with the debt collection company so how can i default with them, this would then i presume show on my file two marks for one debt?? can anything be done to have this removed...

They can add their own default record or take over the original lenders.

If they add their own in their name in addition to the original lender's, then the details and default dates must be the same.

BUT the original must then be marked with a debt assigned marker, so anyone apart from you checking just sees the new one.

Not all collectors do it right or follow the rules properly, so you'll need to explain exactly what it show on your report in order to tell whether it is OK or not.
