What paperwork do I get when I redeem my mortgage?

Options
I have recently arranged the redemption of my mortgage over the phone with the Co-op, transferring funds from my bank account direct to the mortgage account. I was expecting to receive a closing statement, detailing how they came to the redemption figure they quoted and a copy of the deeds to the property with the charge removed, but all I got was a letter stating the fact I'd paid x amount and the mortgage account was now closed. I had to ring up and ask about this, and they said they wouldn't be sending me anything else, unless I specifically request this. Is that normal practise? How do I know they've given me the correct amount to pay off and that they have indeed removed the charge? (without having to pay the land registry for the information...)
