Help – Barbell & Abs Bench – how to use them effectively?

Currently my workouts consist mainly of cardio, I need to add weights to the equation. I have had this Barbell & Abs Bench for some time now gathering dust

I want to use it but don’t know how to use it correctly. Can anyone suggest any workout videos youtube or other.
:j BIG THANKS TO ALL COMP POSTERS, MUCH APPRECIATED :j

  • Look up the correct techniques for squats, deadlifts, bench presses and rows.

You don't really need any other exercises.

A lot depends on how much weight you are going to be lifting. I presume that you might be starting quite low on the weights

The exercises I use a bench for are for a bench press with a bar, tricep press with a bar. Prone flyes, tricep extension, I also do bicep curls with dumbells, single arm bentover rows, tricep extensions, can do them lying with a bar or seated with a dumbell.

Shoulder presses with a barbell. Its important to get technique correct and Im not sure Id be looking for that on youtube, Id be asking someone who is a PT or a gym instructor to go through the exercises with you if possible

Its also important to know what order to do the exercises in, to mix things up a bit from time to time and to be safe, particularly when you progress to lifting heavier weights.

You can also do bodyweight exercises with dumbells such as lunges, sit ups, russian twists, you can do dropsets where you start off with a heavy weight and decrease the weight after every set

And if you are going to end up lifting heavy weights on the bench, get someone to be a spotter, if you need them to pass or take the weight from you.
  • As a fitness instructor, I would recommend that you go to a gym and get advice on using the barbel and weights. You would definitely need to keep your weights low to start with, and if you get advice from a trained professional they can check your technique and make sure you know how to do each exercise correctly and safely. If your technique is poor you will not get the results you want and you leave yourself open to strain or injury. Once you have learnt technique you could set yourself a programme at home or you could buy some pumpfx dvds (https://www.fitnessfx.com) which will provide you with a Workout for use at home. Hope this helps!
  • as a none fitness instructor who is nonetheless very fit and has a lot of home kit, I recommend things like this as a monthly saving on the gym that can really add up. if I want weights I stay in, if I want cardio I go out and run, neither costs me anything!

the bench looks great actually - get a bar and some dumb-bells if not already plenty of options for shoulders chest on something like that, though you can put your knee into it face down and do some back rows also.

one thing I've found is nothing makes up for a chest press until you have something like that - you can get away with most exercises in free weights but not your shoulder and chest presses - until I had a bench at home I continued to pay up at the gym
