Mortgage and the BR question

We went for a mortgage promise with Halifax and computer said no, all they said was due to credit report but there is nothing on it we have checked, we were BR in April 2008 but have perfect history since then and the girl answered 'yes' to the BR question even though it is over 6 years but 'no' to the CCJ questions as it stated in the last 6 years. I've had a look on the net about this and all I could find was the intermediary site which stated 'answer no to the BR question if longer than 6 years old'

Do the intermediaries have different criteria to us actually going into the branch re bankruptcies?
Would it be worth getting a broker and them applying again? If that is the case

Anyway We got a dip from RBS saying we could borrow £368k, we only want to borrow either £240k (if we can get htb) or £285k if not, but they only asked 'have you been bankrupt in the last 6 years' we said no coz we haven't, we haven't proceeded any further as the newbuilds we want are not on sale yet. I read somewhere that they don't lend to bankrupts but a former neighbour of ours has a help to buy mortgage with them they got in December last year and they were both bankrupt in 2007!

If we go ahead will we get asked again about our BR? And then when the solicitor does the BR check I'm assuming it will show up anyway so we don't want to pay our deposit and then get knocked back and loose the £18k we put down

Of course we will answer yes to the BR question if it is asked but we have so far only been asked 'in the last 6 years' which we haven't so we said no!
