Hello,
My fianc! received a letter from HL Solicitors regarding a debt of £430 from Lloyds TSB. They state that if the debt isn't paid in 7 days they will take legal action against him.
I know he is in no debt with that bank whatsoever because I was present when my other half closed the account two years ago (as we now have a joint bank account with a different bank).
I also find it odd that these HL solicitor people stated at the bottom of the letter to not get in touch with Lloyds TSB and to contact their company straight away. Is there a just reason as to why that is the case?
I am not very knowledgable when it comes to things like this & I am losing sleep and hair over this horrible situation, any advice would be enormously appreciated!!

Re-read the letter. Is it full of "if this" and "may that"? If so, it will be a standard threat-o-gram.
I would tell them to prove it. National Debtline's template is here:

Stop stressing about it.
If he has no knowledge of the debt then he should send them a 'prove it' letter. No one in their right mind
pay a debt just because some one says they owe it.
Tell him to print his name at the bottom, don't sign it.
When you hear back from them just come back on here xmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Hi,
You treat solicitors letters as you would a dca`s letters, there is no distinction.
Your under no obligation to adhere to any timetable they set you, as Lensman has advised, send then the "provit" letter.
The obligation is on them to prove the debt is owed by your Fianc!, not for him to prove he doesn't owe it.
You have received what is termed a "standard DCA threatogram" basically a letter which says "we may" take legal action, or "we could" etc, it is designed to frighten you into contacting them, in order to get a quick profit.
Send the provit letter to them first.
You could also contact the original bank to get clarification on what this debt is about, despite what the "solicitor" has told you.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Thanks very much guys, I'll do just that, and let you all know what happens from then on. Another question, why are they sending this letter in the first place? Is this a scam or do thy have a real reason to believe he owes the bank money?0

They send these letters to try to scare you into paying.
DCA's are just scumbags.0 -

Could be any number of reasons, either there is a balance left outstanding that he had forgotten about, charges added later, that have multiplied, someone with a similar name, the only way to find out for sure is to contact the original creditor.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
