Australia: January 2008 - rain in Port Douglas????

We are in the process of organising a trip to Australia in January which was supposed to include 5 nights in Port Douglas (to go see the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests etc) but I have recently been told that January is the rainy season (whilst being very hot). Does this mean it is going to pour down all the time or just that it can rain on and off but in between it will still be the paradise that it sounds? Has anyone been up there in January? I am getting mixed messages and don't want to spend that part of the trip underneath a brolly - we do enough of that in the British summer!!!

it will be red hot at that time of year, wouldn't imagine it would be rainy season though.
i've got a mate in brissy i'll see if he knows and get back to you.0 -
Temperature's pretty constant throughout the year but humidity will be pretty bad in January, rain will probably be on and off but you might do better to reconsider — it's the best time of year to be anywhere else in Australia (except Darwin, Broome, etc)...0

I thought January was the best time for Australia but I have been worried by the rain forecast in Cairns
/POrt Douglas and then was told Melbourne could be like the UK in January - is this true?0 -

Aus is about the same size as Europe.
In the north it's the wet season - hot and humid then a big downpour in the afternoon usually.
In the south it's nice med style weather.
Tazmania is like Cornwall in summer that time of year.0 -
