cancelled direct debits - but they still took their money

I'm in the process of filing for bankruptcy, still completing the forms. Last month I cancelled the direct debits for the credit cards and loans, but my credit card provider (which is also my bank) went ahead and took their money anyway. Any advise on how they were able to do this and how I can prevent it from happening this month would be greatly appreciated.

There is supposed to be a guarantee with direct debits that if a debit is taken without your sayso they have to pay it back. Have a word with your bank

They did the same thing to me. I cancelled the direct debit, & they did a manual override to get the money anyway as the card & the bank account were with the same bank (that's one mistake I won't ever make again). You can either speak to your branch or to Customer Services. Once you confirm the date you cancelled the direct debit, they shouldn't have touched your money at all after that date, & you should get it all back - I did. :)
