I think some people need to remeber the aim here. Whether it's a job or a service, the end game is to make money, and you won't be doing much of that if you are spending your own time & money travelling up & down the country at your own expense to attend meetings.

Have you considered phone calls or video conferencing? If that really isn't practical or the employer/client insists otherwise, ensure they are paying

We get paid to attend meetings - the daily rate is pretty good, but we don't get extra for mileage, which is why the daily rate is pretty good as we have to cover mileage out of it.

The Kent meetings will be rare (I was told maybe once a year) but I don't know about the Birmingham ones yet - but that's not so far so I don't mind those.
