8 year old girls birthday

My neighbour's daughter is 8 soon and I want to make her a bag and purse. I was going for a Hello Kitty theme, but now am wondering if she will think that is a bit babyish.
Any ideas as to what else I could use as decoration instead please?
My granddaughters are 16 & 21 so I'm a bit out of touch now.:)

Hello Kitty seems to be ageless- I have 10-11 year olds bonkers for Kitty, as well as younger children and teenagers.
(Owls are good too though.)

Thanks for your replies. I decided just to make a reversible pink tote-style bag with a different pattern on each side and her initial on it. I filled it with girlie goodies and she was thrilled with it.

Maybe I'll make something Hello Kitty themed for Christmas?
