Hi I've received a notice from hmrc that I'm owed just short of 1k. However when the cheque came it was made payable to mrs k mrs. They completely missed my surname. I phoned and told them and they've told me in have to wait 6 further weeks for a replacement cheque. I think this is shocking. It's their mistake!! Any advice how to speed this up would be appreciated. Thanks

Ask them to pay it into your bank by electronic transfer, that should speed it up a bit.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Ring them up, every day, 3 times a day if necessary lol, they might just sort it quicker to get rid of you ha ha.

at the end of the day it is perfectly reasonable that HMRC make some effort to ensure that taxpayers money is not lost if a duplicate payment is issued and it turns out the first payment actually goes through immediately after it was reported as having failed

OP I am NOT FOR ONE SECOND suggesting that applies to you but I think it perfectly fair that such very simple steps as delaying the issue of a replacement payment until such time as it is certain that the bank has put a formal and physical "stop" on the original is very sensible

so 6 weeks for a cheque which could have been cashed many places - fair
3 weeks for a more easily traced payment direct to a bank account - fair

It's probably coming from a department of HMRC that only pays by cheque, so while it would be more convenient all round for it to be paid electronically it may not be possible.

You do need to keep on top of it, when they messed up a cheque payment to me it took several months to sort out - I did get a small ex gratia payment and a lengthy letter of explanation and apology in the end.
  • Charge them interest at 2.50% or whatever it is they charge you if you pay late

What gets me most is that they can see I couldn't possibly bank the cheque and neither could anyone else due to their incompetence!! Grrrrh I'm fuming x

You could request that you deface the cheque they have sent you and return it to them to re-issue. That may make it quicker?

Hi, still waiting for my cheque. Anyone else noticed the disgusting wait to speak to someone at HMRC. I have been holding average 40 mins per call, however, did speak to the complaints handler who apologised for "human error" told me cheque would be raised last Tuesday and would take 14 days to arrive via second class post. Absolutely disgusting. X
