Well they Cashed my Bank Charge Request Payment...

I just noticed on my online banking that the Halifax have cashed my cheque that I sent them for info on how much they owe me in bank charges.

Now I guess I have to play the waiting game for them to actually send me paperwork. Fingers crossed this could help clear around £1500 immediatley from the £6000 I owe them on the account so effectivley knocking 25% off the debt. Anyone know how long it normally takes once they cash the cheque? I havent heard a thing yet.

Halifax cashed my cheque about a week ago, and I got a letter saying they'd been inundated with similar requests but I'd get my info within the forty days :)

  • If you have requested your bank statments for your list of charges it can take anything up to 40 days this is the timescale they have to respond in otherwise they can be reported to the Information Commissioner.

Once you start the ball rolling claiming back your bank charges it can take anything between 6-7 weeks although now they are in undated its more like 8-9 weeks i think.

I looked into doing this this morning but when I can see what charges you can actually claim back I don't think its worth it, I did interent banking so never really let myself go over the overdraft not until I was setting up my DMP and then I got some interest refunded anyway.

But good luck and I will be interested to hear how you go on with it all.

I am thinking though of claiming my catalogue charges back these there could be a few as they had a habit of sending out the statements too late to pay - anyone else done this?

It was totally my fault that I was overdrawn and ina way I feel bad about even sending of for them. I will be paying back the money I owe them byt after some serious thought I decided that the £30 time fees for writing to me eachtime was a little over the top.

In one week looking back on one statement alone I was charged £180 for bounced direct debits. I think its wortha £10 just to see how much I have been charged. I still havent decided if I will claim them as I am worried about the effect it will have on my current DMP with them. I will post back once I know more

Don't get me wrong I nearly went overdrawn lots of times but always robbed one card to keep the bank going - bit silly now looking back but we live and learn!

Definately you should go for it, from what I have read anyone who has been on a DMP has just had the money paid back into that (if they owe them!) if not wait and see at the time but good luck!

Like I said highly tempted to do it with a catalogue company as they passed it onto a DCA anyway and that DCA are the least patient.

Going over my overdraft or having bounced dd's was entirely my fault to but what made the situation worse was my bank charging me £38 a time for it, they didnt even write any letters to me and to be honest i think 5 charges in one month are excessive. Im not arguing about the fact i should get some sort of charge for the way my account was run but its the cost of the charges im complaining against surely they cant justify £38 a time for pressing a key on the computer keyboard - its ridiculous!

I say go for it why not if you dont ask you dont get

I had a friend who banked I think with A&L and she used to get charged about £200 in total when she went over, in cases like that anyone can see it is just not helpful, you fell short so why you are short we will bang some charges on for you.

Letters these days are cheaper to send out than years ago when hand typed and yet charges are now more.
