I want to buy a printer and scanner

My old HP printer/scanner is on its last legs and I think it's time to replace the old dog.
I would favour quality over price, but we all know how expensive printer ink can be so I'd be willing to make sacrifices to avoid being ripped off in the long run.
Any suggestions welcome.

Have you considered a laser printer? The small ones have the same sort of footprint as an inkjet and printing costs are MUCH cheaper - BUT do check you can get cheap replacement cartridges on ebay or similar. My HP uses a toner cartridge which costs £60 from HP, or £8.956 from ebay - good for at least 2,000 pages and I suspect a lot more (not counting!).0

From experience and a lot of printing, I've settled on using older higher quality printers and buying official but second hand (unused or old stock) ink on ebay.
My main workhorse is a HP Deskjet 1220 C which is an ancient A3 printer.
It does of course depend on what you're trying to print. I only print documents on that.
Having tried out different methods of photo printing, I'm now convinced that third party photo printing is cheapest in the long run.
