advice on bailiff please

my son has arrived at my home saying he has just been visited by a bailiff who is calling back to his at 5 o clock for a payment of 50 pound followed by installments of 20 a fortnight. he is unemployed and just doesn't have the cash. Now i can give him the 50 pound today but my question is this--- debt has never been to court so would a bailiff be involved. He let him into his flat and signed something ( he didnt know any different) but as the debt was taken out on my address and i lived there for 15 years i can quite safely say that no court papers came to mine.. I am going to his flat for 5 and would like to know what questions i should be asking this bailiff. there is nothing of value in the flat he has only lived there for a few weeks and only has a council package which is included in the rent. sorry for the long post but any advice would be helpful thanks in advance

No! Bailiffs can only take money if they have a court order. You need to contact the police I'd say.
The bailiff needs to prove where the debt is. Don't open the door to them until you see the court order, ask for them to give you a name and number for you to contact in their head office and ring them.
If you have no idea where the debt has come from they have to prove it.Back in the red :mad:

he has already let him in and signed something although he doesn't really know what. i had a feeling that they needed a court order or warrent or something- if this is the case i'll pay the 50 -I have learned sooo much from this site and if it turns out to be a DCA he will be told ''politely'' to get on his bike!! my son can the negotiate with the company for a plan he can afford albeit a pound a month at the minute due to job loss0

And hopefully this will teach your son never, ever to sign anything if he doesn't know what he is signing for.
Good luck.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
