I dont know if you know, but if little children lose their milk teeth young then the adult teeth come down soon after.

My friend's 3 year old had to have 4 front teeth removed after running into a post. The dental hospital said the adult teeth wouldn't come any sooner than they would if the teeth had remained.

"Out of interest, OP, what did you wean them on? Water or "baby juice"?"

I think they were weaned using milk substitutes off the shelves (powered and ready mix). Eventually moved to normal Blue bottle milk. Now they do take warm milk in the morning, normally with small added sugar :(

    Why are you adding sugar?!!!!!!!

You really really need to stop this.

It may be difficult now you've set the trend, OP, but it really is worth "weaning" your children back onto drinking water or milk only, between meals. Perhaps a small amount of fruit juice with meals only. They'll thank you for it later when they have beautiful teeth as adults!

I've worked with little children who have been neglected and little boy who was in 4 had his teeth out and all the adult set at the front came down. I can only say what I've seen happen and been told.
It may vary from child to child.

The best thing I ever did to get the kids drinking plain water was having a fridge with a chilled water dispenser and letting them use it. My youngest is nearly 3 and she can just about reach it to help herself. We've had it for ages and the novelty hasn't worn off - they like that it's nice and cold and they like helping themselves like a grown up. I have to refill it often (it's not a plumbed one) which is great! I'm sure you could do something else like a jug in the fridge with cucumber, lemon and mint in it, or a fancy (plastic) jug anywhere really, if you don't have or want a fridge with a water dispenser.

I try to limit non-water drinks to meal times, or at least through a straw when we're out places.

What about sparkling water? Its still water but some kids love it as they are allowed 'fizzy juice'.

When my two were babies they sometimes had cold fruit or chamomile/fennel tea (good for colic).
When I was a kid I had cold, full milk and loads of sugar tea. Eek! I was such a fussy eater that I think my mum was pleased that I would have anything so that was one way to get milk into me.
  • Have you explained the issue to your kids? My 5 year old learnt about what is healthy at school and decided herself she would rather drink water/milk as it is 'healthy for you'. She does sometimes have very diluted pure apple juice with a meal. Also I tend to drink water and she likes to be the same as me.

Also I second the idea about having a special bottle to drink from that is only for water - this worked with my 3 year old who was reluctant to drink water at home (although that is what she has at nursery). She chose a Minnie Mouse bottle in Asda which I said would spoil if we put juice in it!

    Good luck!
