I'm after some suggestions please. My DD turns 7 next month and had asked for a disco, which I was quoted as coming in at £200 {room hire, DJ package {discounted from a friend!} decorations etc} as we're getting married in 3 months I suggested we have a small party at home this year and a disco next year and lovely DD agreed. Though she did get 2 parties last year!
Anyway I am trying to do it as cost effective as possible. I have printed the invitations off at work, they look fab and have cost me nothing {I'm very lucky I have a nice boss these days!}. I've already bought some cheap decorations from Fleabay.
Now for food, what do you suggest I serve? I usually go overboard and spend about £140 and the food is always left over! Also do you have any game suggestions? There's going to be about 8 children in our not very big house!
Thanks in advance

I've found it easier to manage if you either make up a lunchbox type meal for each child or serve a meal like pizza/hot dogs/chicken nuggets/fish fingers and chips. Then just have ice cream and cake.
I know it's not the healthiest option but its what most children like as a treat.
You could even let them choose on the day as most of the above could be kept in the freezer and portions taken out.0 -
Do you think the 7 year olds who you are inviting will be particularly keen to sit down for a meal?
If not, why not make the party during the afternoon? Makbe half 2 until half 4. Serve some snacks (a plateful of fruit and a plateful of biscuits?) half-way through but it saves on the cost of feeding them and the time it takes to prepare the food. As you say, it's hard to judge who likes what and how much they'll want to eat.0 -
Thanks for your quick suggestions! The party is 12-2 so they will need feeding something substantial. I like the idea of hot dogs or something like that. I'm worried in case some parents are fussy as DD attends quite a small well to do school and I've heard of some parents being stern about what they child eats!

If after silly party games. 2 teams - pass the orange. Put orange (or similar size small ball) under chin. Must pass to the next person (under their chin) without using hands. Very silly.
The mars bar game. You need 1 mars bar still in its wrapper per team plus knife and fork, hat, gloves, scarf. Take it in turns to throw a dice. When person scores a 6 they put on the hat scarf and gloves then pick up the knife and fork and try and eat as much as the mars bar as possible before the next person throws a 6. They cannot use their hands to take the mars bar out the wrapper. If you are fussy (or think the kids will be fussy about hygine) give them their own knife and fork. If you are really cunning you can freeze the mars bar to make it more difficult to cut!2024 Fashion on the Ration - 3.5/66.5 coupons remaining1 cardigan - 5 coupons13 prs ankle socks - 13 coupons5 prs leggings - 10 coupons4 prs dungarees - 24 coupons1 cord jacket - 11 couponstotal 63 coupons0 -

Pass the parcel with a few sweets in each layer - I use the mini packs of haribo. Musical statues - dance music on a cd player - would work in limited space.
I've found that traditional party games can have a real novelty value for kids nowadays.“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

Thanks TM,
Those are the sort of games we play every year, but as the little darlings are getting bigger I'm thinking there's not enough room in my living room for them to shake their stuff haha xPAD 2023 Debt total as of Dec 2022 £18,988.63*April £17,711.03

My daughter turned 7 a few months back and we had to take food to her party venue. I just did jam sandwiches, cucumber, mini tomatoes, fairy cakes (decorated with Frozen cake toppers), pots of grapes and strawberries and a few crisps. It was really easy and everything got eaten. You could always change the sandwiches to ham or chicken for a healthier option.
I agree with traditional party games with little prizes or stickers, maybe painting the girls nails, 2 hours will go so quickly with food you won't need to do much entertaining.June GC Budget - 310/400

That sounds nice and healthy and right up our street if I'm honest. Lots of little "picky" things as kids are often so busy they never eat much anyway!
I will do pots of grapes {I will cut them in halves to avoid choking} and strawberries, melon pieces, cucumber sticks and cherry tomatoes. Then some sandwiches. That can't take long and won't cost much.
I've bought some punch balloons that I will blow up {or rather DF will!} and I have a pinata that I will fill with sweets and there will be a cake, so that will do for their party bags. I really dislike this notion that we should provide bags of carp for the kids to take home, it's a waste of money and more often than not it all ends up in the bin anyway!
