cooked chicken

I appreciate this must seem quite sad to ask this question...However.

I am quite neurotic about food safety and hygeine......thinking that I would start being more thrifty I decided to buy a whole chicken in M&S today and cooked it this evening for a roast (just for myself - live alone) with the plan of having it the next day with another roast (cold chicken as i would never reheat it once cooked for the first time)......and then possibly with a salad the following day......so two days or three days depending how you count it......

As i am so neurotic about getting food poisining etc i googled and now i am worried and think that i might possibly throw the chicken away....and certainly wouldnt use it after one more day....

Once cooked I took all the breast off etc and put it on a plate covered with kitchen towel to cool before wrapping in foil and cling film and putting in the fridge........however, it was `cooling` for probably about three hours but its summer and my kitchen was warm from the cooking.....now i am convinced that i shouldnt eat it tomorrow but throw it out.....i ahve googled stuff about bacteria growing whilst it is `cooling` out of the fridge....

Does anyone know whether it is safe to eat please......

Thank you.....

We eat chicken freshly cooked, reheated, defrosted, hot, cold, days old, sat on the side for too long, carried round in a lunch box, in many forms several times a week.

Not once have we been the slightest bit ill.

Stop worrying and enjoy the many financial savings a whole chicken will bring you. And stop googling what could possibly go wrong if you do x, y or z, it will only make you feel worse.

I'm on my own, I roasted a chicken and then spent the next 4 days eating it in salads, curries, stir-frys, extra toppings for a pizza and all sorts. If it smells funky don't eat it, if it looks okay, go for it :)
I use this for any food, exp dates are just 'guide lines' to me, stuff doesn't go from good to bad at midnight on a certain day.

As others have said - If you use google you will find that something is going to kill you and also the same thing is going to save your life.

Use your own judgement on how it looks , smells and tastes. Personally I would be more than happy with cooked chicken that had been in the fridge for a week.

And no reason why I wouldnt recook it in a Curry / Chillie type of dish

We always reheat pre cooked chicken. A few years ago the local Sainsbo used to sell their cook chooks for £1 instead of £1 off when the fresh ones came out of the oven. I bought loads, stripped and froze the meat. used it all the time in pies and curries. Sniff it. If it smells funny then bin it.

I think they've move your thread to the wrong forum, nothing gets thrown away here, until it's grown legs, turns green and runs into the bin by itself... ;)
I agree that there's no need to throw chicken away after one day, I'd use it for up to 3 days later, but not longer, just to be on the safe side, but I'm sure plenty of people would be less strict :)

I use cooked chicken for up to 5 days. After that, it's for the bin.

As for reheating, and ignoring the fact that if you take a piece of well cooked chicken and cook it again it's likely to end up overcooked, there's no problem if the internal temperature rises to 70C+ for at least 2 minutes.

I thought I was paranoid! but I will eat it three days later! I have a very sensitive tummy while my OH has a cast iron stomach! his mum trained him very well by being the most unhygienic person I ever met! she would cook for midday then leave everyones portion on the kitchen table (and there was a fire going in there summer and winter), then heat it up for a couple of hours in the lowest oven for them to come in at 11.20pm on 'afternoons'. um, if they were doing 'nights' they may even find a plate still in the oven on coming in the next morning!!!!!!!!!rofl - that was their 'breakfast'!
use by dates meant nothing to her - bacon could be green and slimy and it still got cooked!

It will be fine, honestly. :)

You can re-heat chicken. May I ask, can you remember where your learnt that you can not re-heat it by any chance? ;)

I do the same as you in that I buy a full chicken and roast it. Then portion up and freeze it. This is the key so you don't have to worry about it sitting around, or have chicken for 3 days on the go.

When you defrost it, say you want it for tea tomorrow. So you take it out of the freezer tonight and put in the fridge to defrost. Now you can eat it cold as it is with salad etc. Or Re-heat in bisto say for a gravy dinner or curry sauce for a curry. I re-heat at gas mark 6 for 30 minutes by which time its bubbling.

If you think about what you were googling for then thats how you found the information you did ;) I bet if you googled how to kill a polar bear you would have found that as well.

If you want to know what really not to do. Once you have frozen the cooked meat and defrosted it. DO NOT re-freeze it.
