Are soda streams worth it..?

We get through a lot of soda in our house so I've been looking at soda streams. Nothing fancy, a cheapo one from Argos for £40..
We currently buy Morrisons/Asda's own soda.. Morrisons is £2 for 8 bottles. Asda is £2 for 6 bottles. We get through 4 bottles a day.
So based on Morrisons prices (as thats where I normally shop) it works out at 25p per bottle... So thats 160 bottles for my £40.
How long does the gas in these things last?

I don't imagine it's going to be cheaper than buying own-brand soda at 50p per 2L.Hope over Fear. #VoteYes0

The gas cannister is supposed to make about 40lts and costs £9 for a refill. The syrup costs min £2.50 a bottle and if used as directed makes 12ltrs. So that equates to about 40p+ a litre0

We used to have one but have had terrible trouble getting the gas refils.0

From friends who have or have had them, I think they're more of a gadget than a money saver.
You have to use their special bottles with their special lid, so if you plan to have a few flavours on the go you'll need extras plus there's replacing any breakages.
There's also cleaning involved with the bottles, which might be a faff in what I guess is a larger household.
Maybe it would be a good opportunity to try to introduce some squash or cordial - play the health angle and see if you can bring down the soda consumption on the sly!?

I found our consumption of fizzy drinks increased when we had a soda stream, and there was a lot of wastage unless I did all the production myself (soda-stream bottles left open lose their fizz much quicker than shop bought).
Have you considered buying the supermarket's own brand very cheap fizzy water (normally under 40p/litre) and adding cordial?Whoops there goes another year, there goes another pint of :beer:0 -
I find mine really handy, but that's because I tend to only use it sporadically for mixers. It's a super cheap machine from the Christmas sales and I'm still on my original gas canister, so the cost isn't terrible either. Personally though if I were getting through as much as you OP I'd just buy the bottles; couldn't be doing with the faff.0

The gas refills are really easy to get. Just nip to your local Argos..
Ds loves our soda stream and it does the best cherryade on earth! You can get the syrup on offer, sometimes working out as £2 a bottle.
It is cheaper to buy the cheapy fizzy drinks in supermarkets thoughIf women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -
I too get the refil canisters from Argos
I use ours as I like fizzy water or just add to blackcurrant squash0 -
OP: I don't know (and don't care about) your views (if any) on Middle-Eastern affairs but you should know there is some controversy about SodaStream which is an Israeli company with plant in Palestine. This is either a good or a bad thing, depending on who you read. Just Google sodastream politics. Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??
