Relatives Debts

I am looking for help in how best to help an elderly relative. The relative has a number of debts, but may soon be able to settle them in part at least.
The relative is now in a Care Home.
He has not lost capacity, but he will be unable to identify the extent of the debts. There is some paperwork, but I cannot tell if this reflects his debts in full or in part.
I do not have POA, and to date no one has. I do think I may be able to get his consent to me dealing with the debts.
Many Thanks for any advice.

I would strongly suggest that he gives you PoA whilst he still can.
A good starting point to identify debts is to get credit reports from the credit reference agencies.http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/check-free-credit-report
If there is some money but not enogh to settle them, one option is to consider full & final setlement offers.0
