Adultwork web cam tax question

I've done a lot of research into this and as a way of earning some extra cash I'd like to work as a camgirl on adultwork.com.

I plan on doing cam work only and would like to boost my income a little.

I would like to know how I go about HMRC and declaring my earnings. I have no idea how to do it!

I'll have a full time job when I start doing this (hopefully in a few months time), so the camming will be extra. Do I wait until the end of the tax year and do the self-assessment thing? Do I contact HMRC as soon as I start camming? How do I do it?

I'd like to earn between £100 and £500 per month, just to help a bit. So nothing extreme.

Can anyone offer advice?

You should contact HMRC to declare yourself as self-employed as soon as you start working. You will then need to declare any earnings and pay the relevant tax and national insurance.

The self-assessment helpline is surprisingly helpful as I had to ask them a number of questions recently.

  • Thank you. So on the HMRC website I just follow the links for self-employed and take it from there?

When I get a job, will my employer be able to find out about it? Do I need to tell them?

You can list your self-employment as entertainer/actress or something similar on your tax return and no HRMC should have no reason to tell future employers.

Your employer probably won't find out unless they happen to log on to the website and see you.

Often companies have a conflict of interest clause in their T&C's which prevents employees working for competitors or doing something that brings them into disrepute e.g. I cannot see an employer of a school teacher would allow it!
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.
