Captain Crunch's Basket League

in Gone off!
I bought the Sun on Thursday, well, two copies ;-) and noticed a column which has a basket of basic groceries from supermarkets and compares the prices.
The basket contains Sliced bread (800g), Milk (2pts), butter (250g), cheddar (500g), eggs (6 med or lrg), cornflakes (750g), orange juice (1 ltr), baked beans (220g), minced beef (500g) and seedless grapes (500g).
It says quality may vary and if something is unavailable in the exact size a pro rata price will be calculated.
The results were as follows:
Morrisons (£9.56)
Asda (10.01)
Tesco (£10.13)
Sainsburys (£10.34)
Aldi (£11.12)
Lidl (£11.13)
Iceland (£11.37)
Waitrose (£16.91)
No surprise that Waitrose was the most expensive (as well as the more pleasant shopping experience in my view). But Tesco and Sainsbury beating Aldi and Lidl? By a pound on basic shopping? The price war really is underway!

There is something seriously amiss with what you have presented - bread, milk, butter, cheese, eggs and orange juice there is no difference in price between Waitrose and Tesco0

Are you sure?
I just picked one item, eggs. Searched waitrose and sorted by price. Ignored the 4 pack and looked at the second cheapest.
Waitrose medium free range eggs 6 pack is £1.50
Tesco medium free range eggs 6 pack is £1
Neither pack are on any kind of offer.
That's 50% more expensive in waitrose.0 -
Just checked milk, 1 pint non-organic milk is the same in both stores.
So based on that I can say.......... Half the items in Waitrose are the same price as Tesco and the other half are half as much again.
Looks like the supermarkets have been right all along. Convince someone one price is cheaper and they will believe they all are, or convince them one price is the same and they will believe they all are.0 -
Difficult to take the survey seriously given that they had a 4 page Captain crunch feature sponsored by Morrisons on that day , And Waitrose where always going to come out bottom because they dont really do a "basics" range0

Yes, funny that isn't it? Ooh look, we have a nice £5 voucher for you to spend at Morrisons... Oh and look, they just happen to be the cheapest supermarket around (honest!) - better get there quick!0 -
It would be interesting to see what the basket results are this coming Thursday. Any Sun readers out there? (I won't be buying until the next voucher!)Downshifted
