    Errr ....... "bake yourself shortbread"? ? ?
    As in - a kit? In a box/packet?
    You're kidding, right? :D
    Flour.
    Sugar.
    Butter.
Oh, and just a (very small) pinch of salt. (If you're a good Scot :p)
    That's it!
My 5-year-old LOVES to make this (as a treat).

Have you seen the price of butter and sugar lately? Can you match the cost, weight for weight?

Shortbread with strawberries and cream, very yumcious indeed.

Butter very widely available for less than £1 per 250g; sugar again widely available for less than 80p/kg; flour less than 50p/kg - so what weight is this mix AND what are the ingredients?
Also, what has to be added to the mix?
SO to sum up, YES I have seen the price of ingredients thank you very much and I would be most surprised if there were any major difference in price for quantity - plus home-made has the benefit of KNOWING what you're eating. :p

My 6yr twins love to make a kit cake. I give them the box/packet and they crack on (I do the oven bit). Yes, I kow it is cheaper, probably, to use your own ingredients, but they enjoy the freedom of having their own 'grown up' cake. coupled with the fact they always help me when cooking and baking I think 35p is a cheap entertainment. Scone mix is 49p in aldi (pack) and they were thrilled with their efforts yesterday.
