Of course they should, and I expect they will, but not simply because somebody asks for it, they have to be responsible to their members for their financial conduct so a request for evidence would seem to be sensible.

If they simply reject your claim then could could ask for further suggestions on how to proceed.

Yes, but they did not ask for evidence before offering the 1 year difference refund, so that doesn't really add up.

It is me that has suggested to the union that they investigate the matter further. I don't have any issue with assisting them and providing evidence, I would expect them to do so.

Your mother could propose a conference motion (via her branch) to amend the system so that it defaults to part time subs rate or will not process a membership without knowing the working hours. If her fellow members are in agreement this would become union policy.

To put this into perspective, without being disrespectful to anybody and especially not my mum!

My mum works 3 days a week, as a factory worker, for about £500 a month. She is only in the union, because she will have been told to be in the union.

She isn't computer literate and wouldn't have the slightest idea about anything like this. I am not in any union and don't have any dealings with unions at all.

The only reason she found out about this, is because somebody from the union at her work suggested she look at her rates, obviously because other people have had the same problem.

She then asked me to look into it and I am trying to help her out, because it does look like she has overpaid a fair amount of money because of this.

She shouldn't need to be computer literate - her shop steward or workplace rep should be able to help her get this sorted. Though it seems you are already on the case for her. I would just suggest being patient, persistent and supporting your mother's claim with evidence as far as possible.

OP, did this get sorted|? I had forgotten to follow this thread.

Just to say that I am not aware that people pay subs based on their hours worked - it is on their gross salary per annum usually. The applicant has to tick a box for their salary amount - it isn't something anyone else should tick and the computer system can't sign anyone up without knowing how much they earn.

I think her first port of call should be her Branch Secretary. They run the branch. They get a list of members and how much they pay and should keep a copy of the original form. They should sort this out for her. I would so do and would be willing to show a member the original application form as a starting point. She should get a full refund of any overpayment.
