Can I really save money online food shopping?

I have not read the article but I do a mixture of online shopping and reduced top up shopping.
I find I can save money buying my staples online as I put my basket on Mysupermarket which tells me which supermarket is cheaper and also if there are cheaper options available.
Delivery charges have dropped dramatically and now tend to cost between £1 and £2.
There is the added bonus of the lottery of substitutions. For Asda in particular if they don't have the item they will replace it and quite often for a more expensive product. if it's not a good deal I give the product back or call them up and they credit the difference.
I then do my top up shops and in particular my shopping for reduced products especially bread and milk which I often find reduced and at a price I am looking for.My Motto in Life:

I shop online for food...use free click and collect at Mr T. It saves me money as it avoids tempting impulse buys, lets me plan and double-check what's already in the cupboards more easily too.
It also means I don't have to shop with my 3 year old. Thankfully he doesn't pester for sweets but I do rush so he doesn't get too bored and so am less likely to check which item works out cheapest. Shopping online makes that easier as I can search for an item and then order the results by price to find the cheapest.0 -
I used to have an online delivery from Ocado. Their products are really good quality. It used to be a once per week delivery and if I meal planned around the offers I did feel I could stick to a budget.
That said since my free pass expired I decided to shop at Lidl and Aldi. I do feel my costs have reduced by as much as £20 per week.
I think the most economical way to shop is to meal plan. Write a list and stick to it. When the £5 off a £45 spend token is in the paper that's when I stock up on bin liners, toilet rolls, washing powder and dishwasher tablets.
It may be cheaper for people who just chuck anything in a trolley for the simple reason when they do an online shop they have to think about what's needed.0 -
I save money by online shopping but of course it depends what kind of shopper you are. In the supermarket I don't have time to have a leisurely wander around looking for yellow stickers or checking out offers fully and sometimes even picking up packets to read the back takes too long (kids!). I go to the shelf I need, look for a second and pick up what appears to be the cheapest that will do and move to the next thing - no time to really compare. I'm also very easily tempted by sweet things and 'special offers'.
Online I can spend longer as the kids will be playing at home. I can properly work out which are the cheapest items, can see everything on a particular offer with one click and can compare to other shops if I want. I'm less tempted by things looking delicious although I do stock up on good offers (but I find it much easier to know what's a genuine offer online).
Delivery costs me £6/month as I have a delivery saver package or if it would have cost me less than that paying for each delivery Tesco refund the difference, so it's about £1.20/delivery and that's probably the cost of the petrol to my nearest store.0 -
