Double built in ovens

Would appreciate any advice and personal experiences.

Our double oven built in electic is due to be replaced, its 14 years old, beyond cleaning and if you try to use the grill it overloads the electic and everything shuts down!

The first thing we've found is that the grill is now on the top and the oven underneath and ours is the other way around. When did they decide to swap them around, was it a safety thing? his will take soem adjusting to.

The other shock is the price. Ours was about £400, very expensive but now they seem to range between £400 and £800. No idea why they are so much dearer than standard cookers. We've tried looking on the web and there are so many to choose from, so many features and all seem to be slightly different sizes. Basically a defrost feature would be useful, a fan so heat would be even all over the oven and self clean. Timers and LCD dispays are essential as well.

Bit terrifying becuse we have never bought anything more expensive than a book on the internet.

Mostly I do stews and casseroles and the odd roast, nothing fancy

Any advice?

Mary

Don't panic, its not too bad. There is a very good site which when we were looking was the cheapest and they have a price match policy. What I would do is going in to a large comet and have a look and get some help with the different features.

For eg our oven is a Neff, you can get it with hydra clean, this is where you put some water in the bottom and it steam cleans it, you still have to wipe it out. We just went for the one with self cleaning sides and top.

So you want to look for one with self cleaning panels and pref panels on the roof of the oven as well. Timer, LCD display, you can then opt to have fan oven or convection oven in the main part, the grill/top oven will always be convection (convection is better for baking cakes, you get a more even rise).

The other cleaning option (not sure of the terminology) is where it heats up to about 500 deg and burns everything off and you are left with a pile of ash on the bottom. (We used to have this facility on our ovens in the US). If you bake your own bread you can get ovens with a proving facility (my mum has and uses this) I just bake mine in the breadmaker.

Anyway I could warble on for ages so I will just find the link for you.

Hope this helps. They have a showroom in Bletchley if you live anywhere near Milton Keynes and they are very helpful.

Just thought of something else, the grill element in some ovens can be lowered for easy cleaning of the roof.

We got all our new AEG appliances from Biasco and would recommend apart from all their prices seem to have shot up since last year.

Personally, I don't rate any of the self cleaning panels, they're fine in what they do but you still need to clean the rest of the oven the old fashioned way so don't see the point, fine if they're included in the oven you want but not as a reason to buy a particular model.

From what you say you do, look at the bottom of the range from the decent German manufacturers ie Neff, AEG etc etc. You'll get top quality but not pay extra for a load of features you didn't want just so you get one that the door doesn't look like it will fall off or a light in both ovens, which is far more useful than a pizza setting but not always included.

Make sure you measure up there's a difference with double ovens 'built in' and 'built under'. I take it you've got a built-in where it's up in the wall. Built under's go under the counter. Might seem obvious but the built-in's are deeper than built-under so need to get the right size.

Have look on the comet clearance auction site for end of lines.
We were fortunate to buy a Delongi double oven ESM495 and hob for £500- was a special deal from our local comet last year.

Bottom oven is fan assisted, top oven is not but both have grills. Also has a monster sized grill pan. Has electronic clock and timer etc. No self cleaning facility, but a nice stainless steel exterior.

When the deal was finished, the ex-display models were sold off instore for about £250-£300 as Comet were only continuing the single oven model. Might be worth looking in your local store.

The only thing not covered in our oven is the bottom and the door and they get cleaned by a man who does!
