Does comping work for businesses?

I've been comping for a few months and I'm just curious about how effective the competitions are to the companies giving prizes.
I can see how advertising in this way could be cost effective compared to other methods but how about direct sales? Do any fellow compers find themselves regularly purchasing prizes they didn't win? Does anyone feel comping is a great way of discovering new products on the market?

My fave comps are holidays and weekend breaks and as a result of comping, I've discovered loads of new places I've never heard of for example I ended up booking a £500 glamping break after I didn't win because I fell in love with the venue.0

I now buy things I had never bought before and recommend companies that were super efficient on service and delivery0

We're going back to a Flanders after winning a break there and have bought from companies I've come across via comping, even if we didn't win!Worse things will have happened in the world today..."The only thing that really matters, it to love and to be loved."0

The holiday prizes are always great, I guess that's why they are so difficult to win! As of yet I haven't spent any money but I do get the temptation. Thanks for replies guys, very interesting0

I won some toys for my son, I've sine bought the remainder of the range and ordered one from Australia that you can't get over here.
I'm the same with clothes if I see new brands of kids clothes that I hadn't heard of before and really like the look of them I end up buying them for Jake. You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

I loved some t-shirts from a family based competition and although I didn't win the comp I kept the company's details (a small UK based firm) and ordered over £50 worth of goods from them, all because I saw the comp!
Is it worth it for companies? Surely the answer has to be a resounding 'yes' as compers are still 'consumers' at the end of the day, and we are a very useful marketing tool for prize providers who want their brand/goods to be advertised to a wider audience (eg via social media!)=^._.^= You will always be lucky if you know how to make friends with strange cats =^._.^=0 -
Especially for entertainment comps; I often see a film (at the cinema or on DVD / Blu-ray) as a result of a comp, or some new music.UEFA: Corrupting Football Since 1954 #CTID0
