Other nationalities work harder on the whole. That's a fact. I blame the welfare state.

what methodology did you use to determine that 'fact'?

is it related to the total level of per capita income?

I saw a brand new development in Pudong (Shanghai), in a hyper-modern Californian style three bedroom terrace house arranged over five levels

When I lived in Malaysia, I lived in a 5 bed house with 5 en-suites,
One of the en-suites only had cold running water.
When I asked why, I was told this was the "maids" living area.

Didn't agree with it personally, but that's how some people lived and indeed still do.

I've noticed that the price of bananas has fallen recently

do you think that is because the Wimbledon people are eating fewer these days.

If you want me to be serious, I would say it's beyond family planning, and we need population control. If we want to interfere in other countries, try getting them to have fewer babies.

Now, in my usual give up on the world and laugh at it mode,
I hypothesize that the people who brought you EPC inspector courses are at it again. In order to get DWP grant for courses for the unemployed, they came up with sex education in schools traing courses. After a one week training course, the "teacher" would turn up with bananas and grapefruits at schools, and introduce the usual concepts. For hygiene purposes, the pupils do not share bananas, and get one each.

I further hypothesize that the DWP notified the DTI that a surge in banana consumption was coming, so the DTI notified the banana industry to increase imports in anticipation of demand. And then a backlash from parents protesting about inappropriate material caused the entire project to be scrapped, hence the glut of bananas, leading to a price fall.

I don't count dialogue with rugged toast as serious conversation

and while sarcasm is rarely funny it should never be taken seriously

Looks like, house prices are not going to drop now, even if the 0.25% interest rate hike comes after 8-10 months.

I'm mildly amused by the overuse of the word 'hike' by the media recently. It's starting to become as trivialised as 'crisis'.

Anyway, I'm off to hike the 9 meters to the corner shop, we're having a crisis in our house and I need to buy some teabags.

Hike = a sharp increase, especially in price or cost.

So in relative terms a .25% rise is just that. ;)
