How to write to a creditor (capQ)

Hi,

I am seeking advice on how I should write to a creditor (CapQuest).

I will explain my situation below so you have an understanding of my situation.

I am 28. When I was much younger (16-24) I was very irresponsible with money and ran up various debts. These included debts with my bank, mobile phone contracts and utility bills. Luckily no priority debts.

In recent years I have been far more responsible with money. Around 3/4 years ago I set up payment plans for all my debts. Some have now been paid off with just a couple left to go.

Yesterday, I checked my credit report for the first time. The only bad thing I could see on there (besides not being on electoral roll etc) was a default from CapQuest on an old Orange phone bill in the region of £1,800 (this was not the bill amount. Other fees have been added). It's this much because I took out a contract for a girlfriend too (I was young and stupid). We separated shortly afterwards and she never paid her side of the bill. I ignored letters from Orange (again because I was stupid) and then from collectors in the years that past.

I have moved house several times and changed my phone number with each upgrade so I assume they have still tried to contact me at a previous address.

I would like to contact them to arrange a payment plan to begin repaying the debt. I also want to ask if they would remove the default from the credit if I begin payments. Is this something I can ask? Is it something they can do? if so will they?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any advice/guidance on I how I should approach contacting them and what I should/should not say in my letter/email would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks

Paul

    Hi

What is the default date for this debt on your credit file? How does the date compare to when you actually stopped paying towards the debt and started ignoring it?

You can ask them if they will remove the default in return for full payment of the debt. They are able to do this, but it is rare for a creditor to agree to (although phone providers possibly slightly more likely than a bank).

Have you heard from CrapFest? Has Uncle Marcus wrote to you to say he is looking after your case?

    Hi Tixy,

    Thank you for your reply.

The default date is 05/04/2010. Looking at the history it would appear the payments stopped October 2011.

    Thanks
