Tarka Dal recipe please?

I have a big bag of Yellow split peas, which I believe it the basis for Tarka Dal (I have seen is spelt dahl and dal, is there a difference?).


Can someone share an easy recipe please? I love Tarks Dal, but buy the ready made one from Tesco.

I use a recipe by Mridula Baljekar from the Curry Lover's Cookbook. Basically, you use equal quantities of red lentils and yellow split peas (similar but not exactly mung dhal, I believe). The split dhal is just the same as re dried peas and split (ie halved) peas like you would use for soup. If you google her I'm sure you will find the recipe. What makes the difference is the bubbling hot "tarka" which is hot oil fried with garlic and spices, poured on top of the lentil sauce.

Good luck - you are making me hungry now, I'll have to make Tarka Dhal at the weekend!
