Paid tax but earned less than personal allowance

End of year pay and tax figures are supplied to HMRC by employers and by DWP.
These figures are entered on the individuals tax record and the computer checks for ay discrepancies
Any overpayment/ underpayment is calculated but as there are thousands of records to be dealt with it takes time and repayment may not be sent out for some months, depending on where you are in the queue.
Your husband's employer at 5 April should have given him a P60 form showing his pay and tax dedcted up to that date.
If he was claiming job seekers allowance then he should have got a p60U.
You can contact HMRC and ask if they have the all the information needed to allow them to proceed with repayment. If not you can send in any P45/ P60 if you have it.
This may jump you up the queue.
Alternatively, you can wait until it is resolved automatically.0 -
I'll just wait, if we're lucky we'll get it just before christmas again, came in handy last year! haha
He didn't get a P60 from his agency, but we did ask for one (for tax credit purposes) and they said they'd sort one out for him.... But I've already renewed tax credits with the YTD figures on his last payslip of the tax year0 -

Be aware that if the agency haven't given your husband a P60, they may not have sent those details to HMRC either!
What with both JSA and agency work on his record, HMRC may not have enough information to issue a repayment and may be reliant on you phoning them up and providing the required info.0 -
The agency should be on RTI (real time reporting) so they will not be a problem for tax year 13/14 it is probably JSA. Just ring HMRC (before 9am preferably) and say (well get him to say) I have paid tax last year and I didn't earn enough so can I have a refund please. My son's arrived in less than the 3 weeks they told us it would be. They had his employers figures (via RTI) but didn't have the JSA to hand. JSA are also bad at issueing P45s. Well correct P45s. They seem to miss off pay in previous employments.0

Agencies often stop sending RTI payments mid year (at the point you stopped working for them) and then don't send P60's or P45's either. However, Eltjuh's husband has got his last payslip from the agency so they should be able to match that up to the RTI and use those figures0
