Second key 'missing'
Good evening,
My OH bought herself a new car from a dealers last week (new to her - 6yrs old)
She had seen it advertised on Autotrader and subsequently on the dealers own website.
In the description it stated that it had 2 keys, but when she collected it a couple of days after paying deposit, she was only given one key. The salesman said he thought they had only had the one key, but would check and let her know.
As my OH had used her lunch break to collect the car, she agreed and drove back to work.
That was 6 days ago and we haven't heard from them....
When she paid her deposit, she was given a photocopy of the v5 so she had necessary details for sorting insurance. It also had previous keeper details. I traced the phone number of the previous keeper and rang him. He confirmed that he sold the car with 2 keys.
What should be our course of action?

Do you have a copy of the advert still? Basically if it was advertised as having 2 keys then the dealer must provide 2 keys.
My advice is to get in touch with the dealer and say you would like the second key and you will be in to collect it in 7 days.

Well at least you know they are not mugging you off and probably did have two keys when advertised.
Keep on at them to find it - if they don't then propose you have a second key cut and they reimburse you for it.0 -
Modern cars can get very expensive when it comes to getting new keys. Make sure you get one, losing an only key can end up very, very expensive, I'm talking £500 plus.0

Agreed. It was advertised as having two keys and you want the second key. Let them have all the hassle of getting one for you.
As Nodding Donkey has said, a key programmed to your car is expensive. If I had to get one for my car it's £385 from main dealer, plus VAT.0 -
And don't let them fob you off with a Timpson (other key cutters are available) cloned key.
With most modern cars you can program the immobiliser to accept another key quite cheaply as long as you have TWO existing keys. Cloned keys cannot be used for this. I'd urge anyone that has two keys to get a third as quickly as possible. It can save you a fortune if you lose an original.
And if you buy a car that only has one key make sure you find out first how much a stealer will charge for a second one. Use this to get a discount.0 -
As above, insist that they provide a "proper" key for you. If they don't have one, they can get a genuine one cut and programmed for you - they would charge several hundred if you just walked in off the street and asked for one, but since they've supplied the car with only one key, they should swallow this cost.0
