                    Hi Guys,
I would like some advice please.
I would like to try and gain entry into the ICT Support technician or service desk job. I would like some advice on how best to go about getting my foot in the door and which courses I should start with?
I am 35 years and have been unemployed for 4 years now and am really in need of a job. I do have some experience of working with computers and working on websites. Any advice/ information would be greatly appreciated.

            Hi have you got any qualification or similar background experience in the past.
 Are you willing to go back to full or part time study?
 First thing I would do is look for a job any job just to get yourself back in the job market then things can open up for you.
 Volunteer work I know someone with no experience (not as technical as IT) was volunteering for about 6 months then got taken on as a support officer paying 25k so it can be done (with a lot of luck and hard work)
 Maybe someone here can give you more of an idea how to get in to this sector0

            Where are you OP? I've seen a job that may suit you.
 Also, if you've practical experience of basics but no paper then there's a FREE course that I've just signed up for that may be of use to you. If the paper work comes through soon and it checks out, I will let you know.
 Failing that, I'd go for wowcher. They have a courses section on there and I'm certain I've seen a comptia course on there which was aimed at this. Currently however, the only IT thing is an ecdl qualification, which may still be worthwhile as it looks good on your cv when applying for jobs as you can say you're putting yourself through courses.

            I'd recommend taking an A+ exam. It's mega easy, affordable and an industry recognised qualification for Servicedesk/desktop support type roles. ITIL is also excellent but will work out to be a little more expensive.
 Also make sure your communication skills are top notch. It's probably the most important attribute for Service desk staff.
 Hard industry to break into but lots of scope for the future.0

            If you can demonstrate some experience with computers then you could try contracting. Start with basic hands and eyes work, migration assistance, desktop deployments, try and get in with the larger contract companies (Computerpeople I think was one from memory). Pay usually 80-120 a day, contracts can be a few days or a few months and usually very short notice. If you are lucky enough to secure a few, show willing, turn up on time, dress better than anyone else (not overboard, just smart). Also, do courses off your own back, you can usually get the study material free and pay for the exams (can be expensive, £250 on average from memory for MS courses). Look at whatever the current equivalent of MCP is (microsoft certified professional).
 As for ITIL, you should try and get Foundation, that is all you need nearly any role until you specialise more.
